What 12 Real Picture Book Projects Show About Illustration Counts

The short answer

Across the 12 picture book projects we publish as case studies, the books have a median of 18.5 illustrations, with a range of 10 to 29 and a mean of 20 (n=12). This is a small sample: 12 published projects, chosen by our studio, not a random sample. Use it as a set of real examples, not as an industry average.

About this data

We are US Illustrations, a children's book illustration studio. Every book in this post has a public case study on our site. We read each page, wrote the facts into one spreadsheet, and counted. We did not use any client contact details or other private data. Nine of the 12 illustration counts can be checked against the linked pages. The other 3 come from our studio's project records, because those pages do not state a count.

Three limits matter:

Key findings

  1. Median: 18.5 illustrations per book. Half of the 12 books have 17 or fewer, and half have 20 or more.
  2. Range: 10 to 29 illustrations. The smallest count is a 26-page book about the senses. The largest is a detailed book about a grandfather and his grandson.
  3. 9 of 12 books have more than 14 illustrations. This is more than the typical figure for a 32-page book. We explain why below.
  4. 11 of 12 pages describe the style as 2D. The 12th page calls its style "classic soft cartoon". 7 of 12 are a cartoon style, 2 are realistic, and 3 are other 2D styles: minimal vector, detailed, and soft painterly.
  5. 7 of 12 projects list a character design stage (one of them is a character study for an existing series). In these books, the main characters were designed before the interior art.
  6. 12 of 12 projects include the cover. 2 of 12 include interior layout, and 2 of 12 include a coloring edition or bonus coloring pages.
  7. 7 of 12 list a hardcover format, and 2 of 12 are square books. This matters if you plan to print with Amazon KDP (see the KDP section).
  8. Only 4 of 12 pages state a reader age range: 2โ€“8, 4โ€“8, 5โ€“9 and 7+.

Why is the median 18.5 when the typical figure is 14?

A standard 32-page picture book has 4 technical pages: 3 at the front and 1 at the end. That leaves 28 story pages, or 14 spreads. Typically, each spread has 1 text page and 1 illustration page, so the book has 14 illustrations. If the art runs across full spreads, that is still up to 14 spread illustrations. Our books are not self-ended: page 1 is the first right-hand interior page. (For the full explanation, see How many illustrations does a 32-page picture book need?.)

So why do 9 of 12 books in our sample go above 14? The case study pages point to four reasons:

The two books at exactly 14 illustrations are the ones closest to the classic plan. One of them is a 30-page book. The 26-page book has 10.

These reasons do not explain every book. One 32-page series book has 24 illustrations, and its page does not say how the art is laid out. Three books do not state a page count at all. So read the reasons as patterns in this sample, not as rules.

What this means for you: start your plan at 14 illustrations for a 32-page book. Then add art for extra pages, single-page illustrations or special features. Your page count and layout decide the final number.

Picture books and KDP print specs

Many authors plan to print with Amazon KDP. We checked the KDP Print Options page on October 14, 2026. Three facts on that page matter for picture books:

What this means: a 32-page picture book can be a KDP paperback, including a square one within those limits. For a hardcover picture book, KDP's 75-page minimum is a problem, so you may need another printer. One of our case studies, for example, lists an Ingram hardcover file. KDP specs change, so check the page yourself before you plan your book.

Methodology

FAQ

How many illustrations does a picture book have?

For a standard 32-page picture book, 14 illustrations is typical. In our 12 published projects, the median was 18.5, from 10 to 29. Longer books and one-per-page layouts have more.

Is this data representative of all picture books?

No. It is 12 projects that our studio chose to publish. Use it as real examples, not an industry average.

Can I print a picture book hardcover with KDP?

KDP's Print Options page lists a minimum of 75 pages for every hardcover size, and none of the 5 sizes is square. A standard 32-page picture book is under that minimum. Paperback starts at 24 pages.

What illustration style is most common in this sample?

Cartoon styles: 7 of 12 projects. 11 of 12 pages describe the style as 2D.

How much does it cost to illustrate a picture book?

This post does not cover prices. See our illustration pricing page.
