We illustrate picture books in three main sizes: 8.5" x 8.5" (square), 8" x 10" (portrait) and 8.5" x 11" (large portrait). All three print as paperbacks on Amazon KDP and as paperbacks or case laminate hardcovers on IngramSpark. Pick one before the illustrator starts, because every page is drawn to that shape.
Why the size must be fixed before illustration starts
The trim size sets the shape of every illustration, so changing it later means cropping or redrawing the art. An illustrator composes each page for its exact width and height: where the characters stand, where the text goes and how much sky or floor fills the page. A scene drawn for a square page does not fit a tall page without losing part of the picture or adding new art.
The size also sets the technical canvas:
- Bleed. Art that runs to the edge must extend past the trim line. KDP says pages are trimmed "by cutting 0.125" (3.2 mm) from the top, bottom, and outside edges," so edge-to-edge art must extend 0.125" past the trim (KDP: Set Trim Size, Bleed, and Margins). IngramSpark uses the same 0.125" bleed "except on bind side" (IngramSpark File Creation Guide).
- Safe area. KDP's top, bottom and outside margins "must be a minimum of 0.25 inches for books without bleed and 0.375 inches (9.6mm) for books with bleed." IngramSpark recommends at least 0.5" (13 mm) on all sides. Text and faces stay inside these lines.
- Spreads. A spread is two facing pages drawn as one wide image. The center fold (the gutter) hides a little of the art, so faces and words stay away from it.
Our 3 picture book sizes compared
Each of our three sizes suits a different kind of story, and all three work on both main print-on-demand platforms. All facts were checked on 2026-10-19 in the official trim size tables.

8.5" x 8.5" (square)
A square page suits centered compositions, close-up characters and young readers. It is a KDP paperback size and an IngramSpark paperback and hardcover size, so one set of art can serve both formats. Our Hear Me Roar case study is an 8.5 × 8.5 in paperback and hardcover.
8" x 10" (portrait)
A portrait page suits tall subjects, one main character per page and stories with more text. On KDP it allows the widest premium color page range of our three sizes (24–828 pages). It is also an IngramSpark paperback and case laminate hardcover size.
8.5" x 11" (large portrait)
The largest of our three sizes gives the most room for detailed scenes and read-aloud books for groups. It is a KDP paperback size (24–590 pages in premium color) and an IngramSpark paperback and case laminate hardcover size.
Common size mistakes (and the facts)
Several size claims repeat online and are wrong, so check them against the official tables:
- "A 10" x 8" landscape book works on KDP." It does not. 10" x 8" is not in KDP's trim table, and KDP's custom paperback trim says "Width must be within 4"-8.5" (10.16-21.59 cm)" (KDP: Print Options). A 10" width is too wide.
- "I can make a KDP hardcover in any size." KDP hardcover has only five trim sizes and needs 75 to 550 pages (KDP: Hardcover). None of our three sizes is among them, so for a hardcover we prepare files for IngramSpark. Our guide to self-publishing a hardcover picture book explains the options.
- "A square book can't be a hardcover." It can. 8.5" x 8.5" is an IngramSpark case laminate hardcover size.
- "A 32-page book can use KDP standard color." It can't. In KDP's paperback table, standard color starts at 72 pages; premium color starts at 24 pages.
How to choose between our 3 sizes
The best of the three is the one that fits your story, your formats and your reader. Ask these four questions:
- What shape is the story? Close, cozy scenes suit the square 8.5" x 8.5". Tall subjects and more text suit 8" x 10" or 8.5" x 11".
- Which formats do you want? All three work as a KDP paperback and an IngramSpark hardcover, so you can have both from one set of art.
- How many pages, and in what color? A 32-page color picture book on KDP uses premium color, which all three sizes offer from 24 pages.
- Who is the reader? Small hands manage the square size well. Group read-alouds benefit from the larger 8.5" x 11" page.
What an illustrator needs from you before starting
Your illustrator needs the final trim size, page count and platform before the first sketch. With these, we set up each page at the right canvas size with bleed:
- Page size with bleed (KDP formula): trim height + 0.25", and trim width + 0.125". The table above shows the result for each size; IngramSpark's bleed chart gives the same figures.
- Page count: a 32-page book has about 4 technical pages and 28 story pages, or about 14 spreads.
- Spreads vs single pages: tell us which pages are full spreads. IngramSpark says it "cannot accept files in spread format (2-up per page)," so spreads are drawn as one image and exported as single pages.
- Cover: the cover is sized from the trim size and page count, and a hardcover cover has extra wrap. Use the platform's cover calculator or template.
- Resolution: KDP asks for cover images at a minimum of 300 DPI (KDP: Create a Paperback Cover).
We prepare files for KDP or IngramSpark, so the art is drawn to the right size from the first sketch.
FAQ
What is the standard size for a children's picture book?
There is no single standard. We work in three sizes: 8.5" x 8.5" (square), 8" x 10" and 8.5" x 11" (portrait). All three print on KDP and IngramSpark.
What size is best for a children's book on Amazon KDP?
For a color picture book paperback, any of our three sizes works on KDP: 8.5" x 8.5", 8" x 10" or 8.5" x 11". None of them is a KDP hardcover size, so for a hardcover use IngramSpark.
Which size is best for a hardcover picture book?
All three of our sizes print as case laminate hardcovers on IngramSpark. Pick by the shape of your story: square for centered scenes, portrait for tall scenes and more text.
Is 8.5 x 8.5 a good size for a picture book?
Yes, for many stories. It is a square size on both KDP paperback and IngramSpark (paperback and hardcover), so one set of art can serve both.
How much bleed does a picture book need?
Both KDP and IngramSpark use 0.125" (3 mm) of bleed on the top, bottom and outside edges for art that runs to the edge of the page.
Can I change the book size after the illustrations are done?
You can, but the art was composed for the first shape, so it usually needs cropping, extra background or redrawing. It is faster and safer to fix the size first.
